Where to stay in Huanchaco

There are lots of great options in Huanchaco, all within walking distance from the competition break.

We have a a 15% discount set up with Hotel Bracamonte - please quote "Waveski" when booking to activate the discount. For direct bookings please email Juan Julio, the manager of the hotel at juanjuliobracamonte@gmail.com

Hotel Bracamonte will be the prinicpal site for logistics, meetings etc during the event.

**This is a wheelchair friendly hotel and has rooms equipped for wheelchair users**

Booking.com is useful to find a place.

Trip adviser is also a good option.

As Huanchaco is such a small town, you do not need to worry about a beach front hotel (or car hire) as they all are within walking distance of the break.

As a reference, look for places to stay which are within 5 minutes walk of the Pier.

Air BnB is also an excellent option.

Adaptive waveski

Foreword

We would like to accommodate all waveski riders who wish to travel to Peru and compete in the World Waveski Surfing Titles. Specifically, we want to assure all adaptive waveski riders that we will be doing our very best to ensure that your needs are accommodated. We have a designated team, led by Alfredo Ferreyros, who will be ensuring provisions are in place. Alfredo is consulting with the World Waveski Surfing Association and is happy to answer any questions and recommendations regarding this important aspect of our event.

Categories

Ambulatory and Non-Ambulatory adaptive waveski riders are encouraged to enter the WWST2020 and provisions have been put in place to accommodate you all. The WWSA are considering accommodating separate events for Ambulatory and Non-Ambulatory riders and are following the necessary procedures to apply the rule change. We are expecting a positive outcome. In the meantime, please register for the event. We will be in touch with all registered adaptive riders by April with an update about the categories.

Flights

We advise all adaptive waveski riders to fly directly to Trujillo airport from where Alfredo and his team will assist you with transportation to the contest site. Trujillo airport is just 5 minutes drive away from Huanchaco.

Internal travel from Lima to Trujillo

By Air

Trujillo (TRU) airport receives flights from national and international carriers. If you cannot find a direct route from your country of departure, fly directly to Lima, then buy an independant flight from one of the following (they all carry waveskis for around $25)

By Bus

Buses are a safe and economical option. They will carry your waveskis and the journey between Lima and Trujillo takes 9 hours. All buses are equiped with fully reclining sofa beds and travel through the night so you wake up in Trujillo.

All bus prices are in Peruvian Soles.

Currency

The Peruvian Sol and US $ can be withdrawn from ATM machines within all major towns in Peru. There is a central ATM in the Municipalidad building in Huanchaco and opposite there is a “Casa de Cambio” where you can change US $ into Soles if you wish to get a better rate (street rate is currently 3.28 Soles to US $). Most places accept US $ and all major credit cards. You need to show ID when using credit cards in Peru - we recommend you bring a photocopy of your passport or your driving licence so that you do not need to carry your actual Passport with you.

Excursions during the contest

You can walk around Huanchaco freely and safely and there is no need to use transport but, if required, local taxis and buses can be picked up in the street.

We will share a list of drivers who can take groups and their Waveskis to Chicama and Pacasmayo so that competitors have the chance to experience the longest left handed point breaks in the world.

Huanchaco tours will be offering excursions to local monuments during the week such as the Ancient City of Chanchán and the Huaca de la Luna y el Sol (Temple of the Sun and the Moon)

Medical info

There are good clinics in Trujillo and medical supplies are available from one main pharmacy in the centre of Huanchaco. We still recommend you bring the following essentials

  • Mosquito repellent
  • Sun block - SPF 50
  • Basic first aid

Security

Huanchaco is a low crime, chilled surf town but our big surf event could attract some unwanted delinquents and opportunist thefts. We will have security guards on site during the event but there are some precautions we advise you all to take

  • Keep electronic items out of sight while walking around the town
  • Do not leave items unattended on the beach
